Adoption Policies
Abaco Thoroughbred Aftercare
At Abaco Thoroughbred Aftercare, our goal is to create successful, long-term matches between our horses and their adopters. The following policies help ensure a smooth, fair, and transparent process for everyone involved.
Adoption Process
To be considered for adoption, all interested parties must:
* Complete an Adoption Application
* Provide 2–3 references, which must submit completed reference forms
Applications will be reviewed prior to meet and greets, vettings and finalizing adoptions to ensure the best possible match for each horse.
Holding a Horse
We understand that making a decision takes time. To hold a horse:
-
A signed Hold Agreement is required
-
A non-refundable $500 deposit must be submitted
Horses will be held for up to 5 days only.
Deposit Policy
-
The $500 deposit is non-refundable
-
If you choose not to move forward with the adoption:
-
The deposit may be applied toward another available horse, OR
-
It will be considered a donation, and a donation receipt will be provided
-
This policy ensures fairness to other potential adopters and allows us to continue supporting the horses in our care.
Pre-Purchase Exams (PPEs)
We welcome and encourage pre-purchase exams.
However:
-
A deposit and signed hold agreement are required to hold the horse during this process
-
PPEs must be scheduled and completed within the 5-day hold period
Without a deposit, we cannot guarantee the horse will remain available.
Veterinary Considerations
As off-track Thoroughbreds, many of our horses will not have “perfect” X-rays or vet reports.
This is important to understand:
-
Minor findings are common and do not necessarily impact a horse’s ability to perform in a second career
-
Many successful sport horses have imperfections that do not affect their soundness or usability
We are committed to transparency and will share known information, but encourage adopters to evaluate horses based on intended use, rideability, and overall suitability, not just imaging.
On Back X-Rays & Kissing Spine
We understand there has been increasing focus on back X-rays and kissing spine findings.
Please note:
-
Studies and industry experience suggest that a significant percentage of Thoroughbreds (often cited around 60% or more) may show some degree of change in their back
-
These findings do not automatically indicate pain or unsuitability for a second career
Many horses with such findings go on to have successful, comfortable careers with proper management and training.
We encourage adopters to work with their veterinarian to interpret findings in the context of the individual horse, rather than relying on X-rays alone.
Our Commitment
We are dedicated to:
-
Honest representation of each horse
-
Thoughtful, appropriate placements
-
Supporting both horse and adopter for long-term success
Our priority is not just placing horses but placing them well.
If you have any questions about our policies or a specific horse, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re happy to help guide you through the process. 💙🐎
